Without a doubt, the most important factor in social networking is audience, audience, audience. Identify what kind of people you’re trying to reach and pay attention to what they’re saying. Build RSS feeds and monitor conversations using listening tools like TweetDeck, Social Mention and Seesmic. You will notice what your target audience responds to better. It can range from images, videos, positive content, negative content, graphic content. If your company, brand or client is targeting a very niche audience, then finding what they respond to is vital. If it’s subject matter that you’re not well versed in, research your facts before you publish anything.

Social media is not a one-way street. If you want to be successful, you have to listen – listen to what they say about you, about your field and to what is being said in general by your followers and fans. Embrace the negative feedback as a learning experience and take it as feedback. Criticism can be turned into something positive and used to your advantage. Being honest and transparent is the key. Ignoring it and hoping it goes away or hiding behind the thick impersonal online walls was not.  Showing the world how you deal with criticism says much more about your institution than the criticism/critique itself.
