To Follow or Unfollow…That is the question

It is sad to see that many brands still believe it’s 2006, when Twitter just started and everyone was dying to follow their favorite brands, even if they were ignoring them.

Well it’s 2014 and it’s not the egotistical Wild West on Twitter anymore, there’s a new sheriff in town and his name is engagement. In today’s market, not responding or not following them back, when they reach out to you is an ultimate social media fail. When people, your customers, reach out to you, you must respond, you must follow back; the competition is fierce and dying to scoop up your audience and at the end of the day, your sales.

Here is the proper way to handle this tweet. This user tweeted her love for our client. We followed her back, sent her a direct message and asked for her mailing address and sent her a gift card! We replied, “Thank you we love you too.” This built a relationship worth its weight in Fish Tacos.

 

If you do this you will not only make people happy but you make them love you.

Just recently, the Facebook app for iOS was given the ability to record voice and within the mobile app, as well as Messenger’s voice messaging support and an improved Nearby tab.

Voice messages originally showed up in the iOS and Android versions of Facebook’s Messenger apps, and later VoIP calling was added to those apps in the US and Canada. The voice messaging capabilities have come directly to the main Facebook apps for iOS as well. Sending a message in the app now gives you the ability to record a voice message  to send directly to the recipient, and also gives access to the camera to allow for still shots or video clips to be recorded and sent.

Facebook is known for rolling out updates very quietly; So quietly in fact that most people don’t notice the changes or how to make use of them. How Does Facebook Affect Your Mood?

Facebook has been around for almost a decade now—first at Harvard University and now used by over a billion people around the world—studies have been conducted on how it affects our mental and emotional states. The results? Ultimately it’s your call, but there are significant pros and cons to this social media platform.

Given the amount of time people spend on Facebook, it’s bound to have an impact. A new study shows you’re not the only one Facebook’s taking on an emotional roller coaster. The survey says the site causes the most stress but also elicits the most positive effect on mood compared to other social networks.

Study participants were more likely to be positively influenced by social media, with 45.9% of people listing Facebook as the site with favorable effects on their mood. YouTube ranked at 17.5%, followed by LinkedIn.

The study revealed that those with more updates on their status each day actually experienced positive mood swings that a control group did not experience. Those who posted more frequently felt less lonely and more connected to friends. The reason why? Sitting behind a computer screen may seem lonely, but updating your status keeps friends on the brain when you can’t see them in person.

It also appears that one in every three Facebook users experience feelings of jealousy and envy after spending time on the site. The study showed that substantial emotional damage was experienced by users who were looking at positive posts of friends who were “smiling and appearing happy.” In many ways, Facebook has become a place for people to flaunt their successes.

Because interactions take place on a screen, where users can’t read body language or non-verbal communication, and can feel depressed even though they’re congratulating someone on a happy vacation.

Is Your Facebook Page Ready for The Graph Search?

A couple of weeks ago, Facebook announced a new feature called Graph Search. Though still in its  beta stage, Graph Search could signify a huge shift in the way people search for information online.

What is the graph search?

Essentially it acts as a search engine within the network of user’s friends. With this feature Facebook users can search and find common interests among their friends. Instead of finding a restaurant in a particular place to go to, the user can find a restaurant that his Facebook friends love visiting in that specific place.

So what can you do to prepare for it?

Aside from doing the usual maintenance to ensure your Page is complete and up-to-date, Facebook recommends the following:

  • The name, category, vanity URL, and information you share in the “About” section all help people find your business and should be shared on Facebook.
  • If you have a location or a local place Page, update your address to make sure you can appear as a result when someone is searching for a specific location.
  • Focus on attracting the right fans to your Page and on giving your fans a reason to interact with your content on an ongoing basis.

Possible “Google Killer”?

To early to tell, really. Although consider its main drivers  return more relevant and meaningful content for users. Not only does Graph Search provide a more in-depth search experience for its users, if no one in a searcher’s network has engaged with content related to his or her query (e.g., if no one in the searcher’s network likes “pizza” on Facebook), Bing acts as a secondary search engine to reveal content from friends of friends, as well as other search results from all over the web.

So far it seems that Place, Music, Books & Movie Pages are the beneficiaries of their category classification.Make sure you have your Page listed as one of these major categories if it fits. If your Place doesn’t fit these categories, don’t worry. Just review your category to make sure you are properly classified.

The main goal now is showing up in Graph Search. This means your page is going to have to be “liked” by more and more users in order to be relevant within their own social graphs and exposed to their networks via Graph Search.

Make sure to fill out your About section complete with keywords. Facebook Pages are indexed in Google and so you’ll want to have your perfect keywords in your About section to improve your chances of being found. i.e Facebook SEO

Always make sure you create content that initiates high engagement levels: Facebook has stated on its website that content with higher engagement levels will not only show up in the social arm of Graph Search (ahead of Bing results), but also in users’ news feeds more often.

Undoubtedly the Graph Search will continue to evolve as it goes through beta, but you can start encouraging interactions such as check-ins and tagging to help your Page show up more prominently as it begins to roll out to more and more people.

ISPs Will Begin Enforcing 6 Strike Anti-Piracy Plan

A long promised U.S. Copyright Alert System (CAS) finally went live. Targeting consumers whose accounts have been used to share copyrighted content over Person to Person networks illegally, or without authority. The first string of ISPs to begin enforcing this plan will be Comcast, followed by AT&T, Cablevision, Time Warner, and later Verizon.

Last year the MPAA and RIAA teamed up with five major Internet providers in the United States to launch the Center for Copyright Information (CCI). They came up with a system through which subscribers are warned that their copyright infringements are unacceptable.

After six alerts, which are largely described as educational, the alerts will result in “mitigation measures.” Users may then, either face a temporary reduction of Internet speed; redirection to a landing page until the primary account holder contacts the ISP and/or redirection to a landing page where the primary account holder must review and respond to educational information.

“After the fifth alert, the content owner may pursue legal action against the customer, and may seek a court order requiring AT&T to turn over personal information to assist the litigation,” AT&T explains.

Under the copyright alert system Internet providers have to inform copyright holders about which IP-addresses are repeatedly flagged. The MPAA and RIAA can then use this information to ask the court for a subpoena, so they can obtain the personal details of the account holder. Although the ISPs emphasized that “education” is the goal, rather than lawsuits.

We were unable to confirm whether or not there was a process in place for consumers to dispute charges of infringement yet. It should be noted that content partners will begin sending notices of alleged P2P copyright infringement to ISPs today (2/25/13)
